How Friday Pulse measures employee experience

Friday Pulse’s data driven approach to measuring employee experience is designed to go beyond simple satisfaction metrics, providing regular, meaningful feedback loops that help leaders and teams make better-informed decisions. By gathering data frequently and promoting open dialogue around experiences, teams can more accurately identify strengths and areas to improve, building a foundation for a happier, more resilient workplace.

The “check-in” pulse

Happiness question

The check-in pulse is a recurring measure offered either weekly or monthly, depending on your Friday Pulse package, and is designed to regularly capture and reflect on team happiness and key experiences at work.

Experience of work: Friday Pulse Pro

In the Pro package, users are asked each week, "How happy were you at work this week?" This anonymous rating captures the user’s overall emotional state and generates a Happiness score on a 100-point scale, which can then be compared across team and organization levels to track changes over time.

Following the Happiness question, users are prompted to share what went well and any points of friction. Users can share:

  • Celebrations: Positive achievements or moments
  • Thank-yous: Acknowledgments to colleagues, which also encourage team connection
  • Frustrations: Points of difficulty or barriers encountered
  • Ideas: Suggestions or solutions that came to mind

These short, 140-character reflections include the user's name and enable them to share valuable context to Happiness scores and encourage open communication.

Finally, users answer a light, conversation-starter question that can help foster team-building and engagement when results are reviewed by the team following each pulse measure.

Appreciation

Experience of work: Friday Pulse Essential

In the Essential package, users are asked "How happy were you at work this month?" This generates a monthly Happiness score, anonymous at the individual level and trackable over time for the wider team.

After adding their Happiness score, users are prompted with five additional questions that assess key aspects of their work experience:

  • Team cooperation
  • Appreciation
  • Work-life balance
  • Feedback
  • Accomplishment

The anonymous responses to these questions help round out the monthly snapshot of employee happiness, providing insight into essential areas that impact team wellbeing.

Users are then prompted to share their Celebrations, Thank-yous, Frustrations, and Ideas, via Notes which include their name, adding depth and context to their scores.

Finally, they answer a conversation-starter question, aimed at building bonds and making team reviews more engaging.

The “check-up” deeper dive

Five WAys to Happiness at Work - new

When starting Friday Pulse, all users of an account are asked to anonymously respond to a set of questions designed to establish a baseline across the Five Ways to Happiness at Work: Connect, Be Fair, Empower, Challenge, and Inspire. These questions help teams understand their overall workplace experience. The deeper dive questions are:

Connect:

Be Fair:

Empower:

Challenge:

Inspire:

During the initial deeper dive measure, two additional questions are also included to help confirm understanding around score anonymity and so users can share how they’re feeling about using the Friday Pulse platform.

Every three months, both Pro and Essential package users revisit these deeper-dive questions alongside their standard weekly or monthly questions. For Pro users, this adds 15 questions to their question flow each quarter, while Essential users answer 10 extra questions.

This quarterly check-up provides an in-depth look at changes in team experience over time, helping leaders celebrate what's working and address areas of concern or improvement.

The Classic package

For clients on the Friday Pulse Classic package, measure frequency and timing are set by the organization. For instance, this could be quarterly, annual, or ad-hoc check-ins, to give a overview of team and organizational experience of work.

During a Classic survey measure:

  • Users are asked, "In general, how happy are you at work?" This anonymous question generates a Happiness score on a 100-point scale, useful for spotting long-term trends in team satisfaction.
  • Users share Celebrations, Thank-yous, Frustrations, and Ideas to contextualize their Happiness Scores. These short Notes include the user's name and can enhance positive connections by encouraging Thank-yous and identifying areas for support.
  • To gain a comprehensive view, all 15 deeper-dive questions related to the Five Ways to Happiness at Work are asked, with anonymous scores given by each user.

In the first measure, two additional questions confirm users’ understanding of anonymity and gauge initial feelings about using Friday Pulse.
